The researchers and developers of the University of Pannonia also contributed greatly to the IVM Zrt. Quality Innovation 2023 competition. The award-winning product of IVM Zrt. is an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted modular, decentralized medication dispenser, which aims to "eliminate medication errors with 100 percent safety and provide controlled access to medication in the hospital environment or in nursing homes," VG reported.
The Complex Systems Research Group, jointly maintained by the Hungarian Research Network and the University of Pannonia, has been actively involved in the development of the nurse trolley's drug stocking strategy. Tímea Czvetkó of the Centre for Bio-, Environmental- and Chemical Engineering Research Development at the Faculty of Engineering added that one of the objectives of the research was to determine the expected drug usage and optimal stocking tasks, to this end the research team developed a self-learning, machine learning supported stocking model that allows for multiple levels of application. In addition to a simple weight loss based approach, it takes into account the diseases and patient profiles in hospital departments and care areas. An additional important aspect of the research is the determination of the placement of medicines in the nursing trolley, which is designed to take into account the frequent co-consumption of medicines.
- We are confident that the results will contribute to more efficient and targeted drug stockpiling practices," he said.
The Image Processing Research Laboratory of the Faculty of Computer Engineering has been working on shape recognition and analysis of image and video data for several decades. László Czúni, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology, added: "An important component of the new type of nurse trolley is the medication dispensing and control process, where the patient's tablet tray and the dispensed medication are automatically checked.
In the laboratory, several optical control methods have been developed for this task, with different advantages in terms of speed, reliability and adaptability. Some of the theoretical solutions use new methods that we are publishing in scientific forums, while we are confident of the market success of the product that the company has developed," he said.
Both experts stressed that the knowledge gained during the R&D work is incorporated into the teaching materials, so that the students of the University of Pannonia can already encounter the latest IT solutions and practical examples of real market problems during their studies.
