The Chinese city of Ningbo has the same population as Hungary: 9.6 million people. Ningbo has been a twin city with Veszprém for 20 years. One of the results is the photo exhibition organised at the University of Pannonia, which was opened on Monday with the participation of the Ningbo delegation, which is in Veszprem.
The partnership between Veszprém and Ningbo started twenty years ago, and since then many pleasant memories have been linked to this friendship, said Mayor Gyula Porga on Monday morning at the University of Pannonia, where a photo exhibition presenting the culture and everyday life of Ningbo was opened.
In his welcome speech, the mayor added that it is a source of pride for Veszprém that it has an excellent relationship with a city with such a rich culture and history, and he hopes that this will continue to be the case in the future.
A six-member delegation from Ningbo arrived in Veszprém, with Chen Weineng, the city's deputy director - the equivalent of a Hungarian deputy mayor - welcoming the people gathered in the university's community hall.
The head of the delegation said he was touched by the warm welcome they had received in Veszprém and, echoing his Hungarian counterpart, he said: Ningbo is also committed to strengthening ties between the two cities.
The exhibition features fifty images of the Chinese city's history, culture and everyday life in Ningbo. From a Hungarian - and especially from a Veszprém - perspective, this is also special because it is a city of almost ten million people, spread over 9600 km2 on the East China Sea. There are images of local festivals, industrial complexes, urban green belts, and many solutions that could be found in Veszprém, but on a much larger scale.
On behalf of the host University of Pannonia, Rector Dr. András Gelencsér welcomed the audience, which included some Chinese students. The Rector recalled that the University of Pannonia entered the international arena in earnest fifteen years ago, and that it was the first time that the institution welcomed Chinese students from outside Europe. He added that, although the scale of the two cities is different, they are looking for common ground and are committed to the partnership.
As a farewell, Chen Weineng invited everyone to the Chinese city to experience the rich Chinese culture in person.
