Historic jewel with a rich legacy

Nagykanizsa is a truly special place with a history that dates back to prehistoric times. Thanks to its excellent geographical location, the city held a prominent role as early as the 1300s. Its famous fortress, built during this period, was valiantly defended against the Turks by Captain György Thúry from 1568 to 1571. Although the fortress fell under Turkish rule from 1600 to 1690, Emperor Leopold I ordered its demolition in 1702, fearing it might serve as a stronghold for noble uprisings. The city experienced its golden age in the latter half of the 19th century with the construction of several railway lines that boosted its commercial significance.

Austro-Hungarian Monarchy vibes

Nagykanizsa boasts a colorful architectural heritage. The Vasemberház (Iron Man House), originally built in the mid-18th century in Baroque style, was later enhanced with Classical elements. The tympanum on the Erzsébet Square side adds simple elegance to the building, which once housed shops, workshops, and residences. Its facade features an armored knight, symbolizing its past as an ironmonger's shop. The Nagykanizsa Synagogue, a Classical-style building, currently stands empty but serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events.

The MAORT housing estate is a unique part of the city, developed in the mid-20th century as a residential area for engineers and workers in the oil industry. Meanwhile, the Guttmann Palace, a hub of vibrant cultural activity during the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy, hosted many renowned musicians in the late 19th century.
